Electric Vehicles

A few of my thoughts on electric vehicles.

In this blog I want to go over my honest opinions on electric vehicles and the pros and cons of owning one.

To start with, there is no doubt that in the future electric vehicles will be the only ones on the road. Diesel, petrol and even hybrid cars will slowly disappear but this will take such a long time to happen it might not even be within my lifetime. The government have stated that the sale of diesel and petrol cars will be banned in 2030, to me this seems unrealistic due to the sheer amount of diesel and petrol cars currently on the road. If they do ban the sale of diesel and petrol cars in 2030 what implications will this on the vintage car collectors in the UK, will this leave their collections worthless as they cant be sold. To carry on with some negatives before I get on to all the positives, looking at the big picture in a country struggling to supply enough electricity as it is, how will we as create enough to power to supply a whole country using electric cars. Renewable energy is not yet good enough to supply this much power, this means that we will have to increase our use of fossil fuels that is going to maybe have as much of an impact on the environment as having diesel and petrol cars on the road.

Even though I have started with negatives on electric vehicles, it does not mean I think they are bad. In fact I think they're a great idea. The biggest positive of electric vehicles is obviously the minimisation of CO2 production improving air quality for everyone. Also it can drastically reduce the consumers travelling costs as charging your car at home can work out to 2p a mile, whereas diesel and petrol cars work out to be around 12p per mile. In terms of technology within the car electric cars are running away with it, if you look at the likes of Tesla and even the electric lines in Mercedes and Audi what they give you in the car is much better than what you can get in their standard cars. Another positive of having electric vehicles on the road that not many people think of is that, noise pollution by busy roads will basically disappear as electric cars are near to silent, so anyone who has the problem of being kept awake by busy roads at night would have no problem if all of the cars on the road were electric.

We will be adding electric vans to our fleet in the future and would tell anyone that they're a great idea or something to think about getting in the future. The next hurdle for electric car manufacturers to get over, is the long charging times compared to filling up your car at the petrol station but once this is overcome there isn't much more they can improve on.
